Anthurium Zara x Michelle x Carlablackiae For Sale – Exact Plant #480

This is the kind of hybrid that shows up in a collector's greenhouse and immediately gets photographed. Exact Plant #480 brings together three distinct genetic contributors in one compact, striking specimen, and the result is a plant that punches well above its price point in visual impact and collector credibility. The specific plant photographed is exactly what ships to you.

The Lineage – Three Genetics, One Plant

Zara x Michelle is a DocBlock hybrid – developed by Dr. Jeff Block, a physician and botanist who has spent decades building some of the most respected collector Anthurium genetics in the hobby. DocBlock hybrids are specifically bred for thick velvety foliage, bold contrast venation, and those dramatic emergent leaf colors in burgundy, red, violet, and deep purple that mature into rich dark green. Zara x Michelle is one of the most recognized crosses in his lineup – a combination known for strong hybrid vigor, elongated heart-shaped leaves, and the kind of foliage quality that made DocBlock genetics so sought-after in the collector community. Anthurium carlablackiae is the third parent, and it adds something that few species in the genus can match. Native to Panama and Colombia, it was discovered and named for horticulturist Carla Black who came across it while searching for heliconia. The best specimens of carlablackiae carry foliage that is nearly black – a deep, saturated, almost light-absorbing dark green that reads as black in certain conditions – with striking white contrast venation running through it with extraordinary clarity. The petioles are ridged and range from greenish-red to deep burgundy. It is a compact grower that tends to hold its leaves at low horizontal angles, giving mature plants a dramatic, low-slung presence that is immediately recognizable. Combine all three and what you get with Plant #480 is a specimen that carries the hybrid vigor and velvety foliage depth of the DocBlock lineage with the near-black intensity and white-vein contrast of carlablackiae. At $50 this is a collector hybrid at an entry-level price, and that combination does not stay available for long.

What to Expect as It Grows

  • Thick, velvety leaf texture from the DocBlock Zara x Michelle parent
  • Dark, near-black foliage coloration influenced by the carlablackiae parent
  • Bold white contrast venation that intensifies with maturity
  • Emergent new leaves may show burgundy, red, or violet tones before maturing to deep green
  • Compact, low-growing habit with horizontally held leaves from the carlablackiae influence
Like all complex Anthurium hybrids, the foliage expression will develop and improve as the plant settles into its new environment and pushes successive new leaves. Give it time and good conditions and it will reward you with progressively more impressive growth.

Care Guide

Light: Bright indirect light is the target. A grow light placed 12 to 18 inches above the canopy is ideal and will produce the fastest, most vivid growth from this hybrid. The carlablackiae parent is notably more light-tolerant than many velvet Anthurium species and can handle higher light levels without bleaching – which also means this hybrid is a little more forgiving of brighter conditions than a pure crystallinum or dressleri would be. No direct sun. Watering: Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of growing medium approach dryness. Water thoroughly, let it drain fully, and never let the plant sit in standing water. The carlablackiae genetics in this cross make it fairly robust in the watering department, but like all Anthurium, it will not tolerate consistently soggy roots. When in doubt, wait a day. Humidity: 65 to 80 percent is the sweet spot. The DocBlock parent genetics thrive in elevated humidity and the carlablackiae parent appreciates it too, even if it is somewhat more adaptable. A humidifier or grow cabinet will produce noticeably larger leaves and more vivid venation contrast. Do not mist the leaves directly. Temperature: 65 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 28 degrees Celsius), stable and consistent. No cold drafts and no air conditioning exposure. Warmth and humidity stability are the two most impactful environmental variables for this hybrid. Soil: A chunky, fast-draining aroid mix. Orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of coconut coir or sphagnum moss works well. Some collectors grow carlablackiae and its hybrids in pon in self-watering pots with great success – worth considering as the plant establishes and grows. Fertilizing: Light and consistent. Balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter to half strength every 4 to 6 weeks during active growing season. Reduce in fall and winter. Toxicity: Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from pets and children.
